This happened to me a few years ago with the 1984 850 I had. I used a small rat tail file and made the notches deeper on the bracket in the cab where the concave lever latches and that solved my problem. Your idea of a stronger spring would also help. Hope this helps you.

A set of vice-grips on the semi-circular indicating guage works well also. I bent the arm on the 750 years ago . It wouldn't latch at all so I just used the vice-grips.
