jerry: We're redoing our rotor, I'm going to do a St. John mod. to the rotor, also getting the new front beater installed. While the feeder house is off we're going to replace all the bearings in it and check out the feeder chain. First time we've ever done this much work to a Massey combine, hoping it makes it better than new. Good luck. Neil

Neil do you farm near Abernathy, SaskIJ Terry from st john welding mentioned a guy from there was looking at outting the kit on his rotor... I farm about 30 min northeast of winnipeg and am looking at doing the same thing to my 8780 for better threshing in wheat and alfafa and to try and improve the straw for baling. let me know how the change goes for you if you dont mind, thanks Ed

sidewinder: I'm that guy, from everyone I've talked to, Terry's mod is the way to go. But you'll have to jog my memory this fall. Neil

If you are rebuilding the beater, replacing the bearings etc.make sure you check the felt bushings at each end of the beater. They keep the trash and grain etc from getting into the bearing. My machine was bought used but "FIElD READY" three years ago. I couldn't figure out why I kept going through beater bearings and the beater kept plugging up in tough straw (not real easy to unplug either). The felt gaskets were not there and neither was the 3_16"X 1.25" beater wearplate. I Had to pull the beater shaft to get the spacers on ( not real easy since the "repair person" that rebuilt it before me burred the shaft) Anyway, no more problems since that was fixed. By the way, left spider will slide to the centre of the shaft but the right spider is on a stepped part of the shaft. It can only be removed once the whole shaft is out.

I am keeping an eye on the suggestions and comments here at least until we start our repairs, probably next summer. If at any time someone has any added comments go right ahead. I would rather learn from others experience rather than own own stupidity if you know what I mean. Thanks.
