Combines 8590 9720 tire advice

Rice risers on the axles just raise the front up. I think its 4 inches. Our 9790 and 8780 have them. We are running 67 inch floaters on the 80 and 710x38 duals on the 9790 with no problems. I wouldn't think you would have to change anything on the back to run 28l26's. Maybe something in the proportioning valve.

As for the rice adaptors, that is mainly for clearence of the larger diameter tires. The RWA " ratio" is self determined by the unit. When you install a RWA, you just TEE into the supply line, that go from the Hydro pump, to the Drive motor. Then the oil just self equalizes between the front, and rear drive units( It travels the path of least resistance. Which ever circuit ( front or rear ) that has the least resistance, that is where the oil goes) They do make different size drive units for the RWA. This is to give more torque to the rear wheels for the larger size tires. Just start calling salvage yards for the units.and if possible get the largest unit you can. ( You can check Mud Hog Website, and that has some information on the different size units) Also a unit from a different make of machine will work on yours.The differance between them is the axle mountings,( if you are handy you can modify your axles so as the wheel drive units can bolt to yours),the hoses( due to where you tap into the drive lines) and the taps themselves (but most will work on any model). oh and also the color of paint. Try the salvage yards around Seikston Mo. a few years ago there were 3 large yards, and each one had quite a few units.HTH Joe

I have talked to many 9720-8590 owners and almost all have had final drive axels break when they put on duals. I had one break on me this season with single 30.5's. But found out later that that machine had duals just before I purchased it. I would not recomend duals, as a matter of fact I would not even turn the original wheels out. It puts to much stress on the very evpensive axel ( about $2,000. ) not to mention the other damage that can occure when one breaks.

I noticed you posted on the forum that you were going to move the fuel tank, just curious as to why. Also you had mentioned changing out the final drives, what will you be putting on in place of the whiteIJ On our heavy clay ground we require more tire footprint. I probably should change my final drives to accomodate duals. Any info would be appreciated. thanks JW

I am moving the fuel tank mainly to make cleaning the machine easier. For us being custom operators, we have to clean the machines spotless several times a season and a lot of trash builds up between the fan housing and the tank. Also with the tank that low in the frame the engines have a tendancy to drop the fuel if they sit for more than a few days. As far as the final drives we have not decided what to use. We have been looking into the final drives from the TR 97 or TR 98 New Holland. They seem to be plentifull in the salvage yards ( which means people don't have much trouble with them ). And I have talked to several TR owners and they have never had any trouble with duals. But this is not for certain yet. We are still investigating other possibilities. If you need more footprint I would look into a set of tracks. The only thing keeping me from converting to tracks is the slower road speed. We make a lot of road miles on our machines during the harvest run.

Did white_massey make a heavier final drive in the 8590 seriesIJ Were the shafts undersized, gear problems, heat buildupIJ Is there anyway to beef up the drives other than changing them out to another makeIJ I know white had problems with their earlier models such as the 8900, 8920 You would have thought given their history they would have made the final drives on the 9720 bullet proof. Did massey have a better final driveIJ

I think the view that those combines had final drive issues is correct, I have heard of axles breaking on the early Masseys and also IH's. I dont know if you could mount up Gleaner finals but they are very durable. I have never seen one break. I am thinking the new ones are labeled S-37's. We run duals and have no fears of axles breaking on the Gleaners.

I have 420-46 duals and 18.4-26 with gillcrest RWA on mine. The duals are centered on the hub, fit 22" rows and have not caused any final drive trouble so far. The transmission always has metal on the magnetic plug. I wounder if turning the taller tires is more than it can handleIJ I paid $3,500 for the rwa used with rims, no tires at a salvage yard in Salem, South Dakota 2 years ago. I always run with it in gear to take strain off the transmission and final drives. It seems to move much easier. Worthington ag parts had a rwa but were very high priced. I would like to find some axle extensions to get the duals between the rows. My outside dual runs on the 30" row right now. Good luck

I take it your combine has duals set up for 22" rows and you are doing 30". I think you can get a spacer to go between the duals to get the outside one out a little further. I've seen such a spacer on John Deere combines. You could call Keltgens in Olivia about it 320-523-2411. Expect them to be a little hesitant and high priced though. But if you can find out what is used you can probably pick them up at a auction or from some one who has no use for them a lot cheaper. One other solution is to trade your set up to someone who is in 22" rows and get his 30" set up. When I had my 9720's I had 30.5 tire in 30" rows and they went down them perfectly without knocking down any rows. I used bell band duals when it was muddy. 18.4 x 38 dualled to 30.5. They are both the same height. Worked fine and I never had any final drive problems.

Adam, I think I know where there is a 9720 close by that is being salvaged out. I belive it has 30.5 tires on it if you are interested.
