Horse power on MF Combines is as follows, all figures taken from Massey service manual. AT6.3544 = 140 hp @ 2400 rpm; AT6.3544cc = 158 hp(intercooled version); AV8.540 = 168hp @ 2400 rpm (prior to ser. n 15224); AV8.540 = 179 hp@ 2400 rpm (S.N. 15224 and up) The V-8 engine came with the hydro, which sucked about 30 hp. Any turned up 3544 was every bit as powerful as the V-8. The unions killed that company (M.F.) Why Massey stuck with those Perkins Diesels I'll never know. They were about the worst for fuel economy and durability. Massey had an excellent cylinder design (hi-enertia) much better than Deere even uses today. Those cylinders did a better job with less hp. Massey had a reputation for quality control problems, resulting in more maintenance. Several areas should have been built heavier. I still like those old Masseys, easily the best looking machine out there....still. But mine is 19 years old and I need something newer, so its time to move on, and it will be a Deere, they do build a good machine.
