Combines 87 Gleaner R70

I upgraded from an l2 to an R60 in the same vintage as the R70 you are looking at. I wasnt very happy making the change but the family insisted on newer technology. My son said, dad, we are going to look at a bigger combine today. Would you like to come alongIJ Thats the best decision I made in many years. $20,000 sounds like it is in the ballpark. Of course an 87 isnt as good as an 88, and an 88 isnt as good as an 89, and an 89 isnt as good as a 91, etc. Do you get my driftIJ Most of us have to settle for what we can afford. Tom in MN

I understand what you are saying and where you are coming from. My questions is, what makes the newer ones better than the 1987 model, and are there updates available to get the 87 up to parIJ

An '87 R70 is a very very updated '80 N7 with Deutz motor. Some updateing goes on every year weather they need it or not. There is surely room to do a bunch of fixing for that price. Being 15 years old and with them amount of hours you'll need to check with previous owner or dealer to see whats been done or needs to be done. As far as upgradeing beyond what that previous owner or dealer knows about you'll have to ask. Main thing an R70 would need other than normal wear and tear idems is shimed helicals or channel helicals. Depending on your crops and what has been done would make some difference what you should do. Sorry if not specific enough but some operators can destroy a machine in less than a thousand hours and some are excellent at three thousand. Makes a big difference of what you need to put in to get up to your specs.
