Main difference is in the engine. Up to 285 hp on the XP from 260 hp on the 8780. If you tell me what year of combines we are talking about I can give you more details.

Thanks. I am wanting to compare a 2000 8780 with a 2002 8780 XP. Did all of the 8780's have the 2-speed rotor gear box like the XPIJ Also, are the front beaters similarIJ Other differences_ similaritiesIJ I own an 8570, and drove an XP several hours last fall. I'm more than sold on the XP, but some of the low hour 8780's out there are more economical. I think I could live with a few less ponies, but don't want to get too far from the outstanding performance of the XP.

The 2000 model should be an XP, you may want to check that. The 2 speed gearbox was put on the Massey in 2001. Chrome augers were offered the same year, along with larger steering cylinders. In 2002 the separator clutch was increased to 15" in diameter, the unloading auger gearbox was quieted, and a spiral vaned front beater was introduced in models s_n Hl87178 and up. A kit is available to put the spiral vaned front beater into older machines. It provides smooth, even feeding, and is quieter. I would recommend this kit on any machine. Hope this helps.

Well my 8780xp showed up here yesterday and my 8780 left.It sounds like you have gotten most of the info all ready. There are a number of little things I noticed,auto mode for unloader,no foot and inch pedel,different chopper and a few other things. But I think if you make a good deal on a 8780 put some of the improvements on it there is not that much difference. And its easy to turn up the fuel. good luck

Thanks for all the info. I will be looking at a '99 8780 (sorry, not a 2000) vs a '02 8780 XP. When I used a '02 XP last fall, there simply was no comparison with my 8570. If I go with the straight 8780, I want to be sure to not give up some of the performance I saw in the 8780 XP. HP is an easy fix, and not a concern. Improved wear points are also not a big concern in my application, nor are comfort and convienience features. From what I have seen, and what you guys have told me, my concerns lie in the 2-speed gear box and front beater. I know I can update the 8780 to include these, but at what costIJ The XP's rotor would take anything I could shove into it, including raggy, green stem soybeans (conditions that would stop my 8570 in its tracks). I have to assume this comes from the increased HP, constant speed rotor, improved front beater, and more torque from the gear boxIJ To sum it up, I'd like to save several $K by going to an 8780. How much difference does the gear box and improved front beater really make in tough harvesting conditionsIJ What would be the cost of updating the 8780IJ I'm asking you guys these things before I go to the dealer, so I can be somewhat prepared, and your experience is priceless. AGCO does not make a kit for the 2 speed gearbox, but it can be added to the 8780. It will take some modification where the gearbox mounts, and when installing the linkage. The gearbox is going to cost about 2600 to 2700 dollars, that doesn't include any of the linkage, or any labor costs. The helical vaned beater kit is less than 100 dollars, but will take some work to put in. You have to cut off the old vanes, and weld the new ones on. I think that you will notice improvements in performance with both of these kits.

There are 2 gearboxes available for the 8780 - 0ne is a high torque low speed - the other is high speed low torque. The first one is used in small grain machines - the second one in corn_bean machines. I just converted a small grain machine to corn - gear box and adaptor plate plus short shaft was about $1500. Also have an extra 1997 8780 grain machine with only 430 hrs. on separator for sale.

Two corrections to the above post: 1. I have the gear boxes switched;ie. high torque_low speed is used on corn_bean machines. 2. E-mail address has changed - installed sat system - now is: cdadams@direcway.com - sat is excellant when it works but it has been down for 4 days and they can't get service out here for another 5-7 days - lucky I didn't cancel my dial up account which I am using now - technology is fine when it works!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
