I wouldn't worry about drives ect. for it's built for 12 row corn heads. I would check diameter of lift cylinders and compare with your buddys machine. I believe 3" is the big ones back then. look at tag on final drive and if you have lug nuts or bolts. Bolts were used on heavier drives. Drives should switch with your buddys machine. Might be best to take a visual on what he has for sure. I think I would opt for larger head if your terrain permits. If you ever opt for newer machine you'll be glad you went bigger (I think)!!!
