I have a 1215 Marliss drill with a no-tiil caddy, and I plant behind a a M2, l2, that don't have a chopper and a N-5 that does, and it plants beans, wheat, and cotton real good, but sometimes when the ground is dry in some of this red Ala. clay I will add some weight to the caddy.

We bale straw behind our r50 w chopper. Pulling the bottom knives out and running on slow speed will equal not much difference in impeller and chopper. However we get much more straw by harvesting the wheat high at flag leaf then cutting with a disc mower at a 3" height. This way you have no problem either way. Keep in mind we have a set up of 'hyperized' version which puts out longer straw.

I second this post. In addition: We went the opposite of your suggested route. Our R40 had an impeller. We didn't like the wads of green stemmed beans, as we put no-till winter wheat in (with a no-till Tye drill) as soon as the beans came out. We spent a day and installed a chopper. liking the results so far.
