Our 96 R72 would not start intermitently. It turned out to be a small relay under the radiator(small black plastic relay like an aftermarket fog light kit sometimes contain) . It wouldn't even fire sometimes then the next time it would fire right up. I to had the cummins guy check it and put his computer on it and declare it was a loose connection but it acted up right after he left.Wallet $270 lighter. A diesel repair shop foreman told me to keep the fuel as clean as possible to prevent problems with that electronic controled box on the fuel pump(expensive,$2000CAN I think he said)

Had a N14 Cummins in a tractor that acted just like that. Turned out to be a small little dohicky in the fuse box. There is a wire that runs the electric fuel valve on the left side of the engine, and it was not getting power all of the time. There is a turn knob on the back side of our electric valve, and for a day or two we turned it in and out to start and stop the Big N14. Hope this is your problem. A volt meter on the end of the wire should tell you all you need to know. If it is, it is an easy fix. I-----------F, a word that big should have more letters in it.

when my l10 R72 does not start after turning it off two minutes before, I go back to the engine and top off fuel pump is the electric shut off with 1_2 inch nuraled screw driver slot manual over ride screw that will turn fuel on with out electriity,do that and the motor will start and run, turn screw in to do this.

Gleaner supplies currant to this engine threw the relay the other guys mentioned. Had a couple of these go bad and maybe one of the electric solinoids on top of pump. If this mainly happens when fuel is below 50% I would suspect the charge pump on engine. It can have a hard time sucking up prime if fuel level in tank is lower than pump. If I had enough problem with this I would be tempted to add and inline electric pump to help keep the engine happy. Good luck
