'96 should of had long shoe. I did hear of a couple guys switching back to short shoe that first year for a couple bugs needed to be worked. I'd be tempted to see if long shoe could be found for the hills or else I bet your lip trick could help. Good luck

I installed a 1" x 1 1_2" piece of wood along the back of the chaffer tilted back at the same angle that the sheet metal on the sides are. That little piece of wood made a big difference in the loss that I was attributing to either the rotor or head. This is on a N6.

NDDan, I'm sure I've seen somewhere on this site a mod for the back of the chaffer that looked like a wing you might put on the boot (trunk) of your car, but I cannot find it now. It might help with this problem also. I think it was used for canola, but cannot remember exactly.
