My two cents worth. I only use the filler plates for corn. I cut wheat and soybeans without them, and no problems. My understanding is that the filler plates just keep corn ears from getting chopped up by the cylinder, thus causing seperation problems.

we only use ours for corn also we find the dirt builds up in the drum to often

The crop condition will dictate whether you have to use the filler plates.If the wheat is hard to get out of the head you have choices, run more cylinder speed with a tighter concave, shut down clean grain sieve for more return, or use the fillers. Personally I would use the fillers,speed and return crack grain.
