Combines 963 stalk roll bearings

I think you are waisting your time unless you are in sandy soils. Shoup mfg sells the bushings for $3.95 and the stalk roll support with replaceable pin for $42.80 Not that I did not think of doing what you were thinking about either. But fairly expensive kit from CNH. If you were only to buy the augers and change them on the rolls remember most 900 series rolls may be aluminum and If you got the swedge pins out you still have to get the augers loose from the aluminum. Once I did it I felt that the bronze bushing is still the best and quickest way to replace. Next time only need the $4 bushing and a $20 pin. It is real easy to thread the bronze bushing with a 3_4Male NPT tap and use a peice of pipe to make a hollow tube puller or if you have a big enough slide hammer not a problem either.

Thanks Todd for your good input. I was just wanting to eliminate the greaseing. Doesn't take a lot of time, but time is valuable at harvest. Are the pins replacable on the CIH lower supports or just on the Shoup supportIJ TIA

We converted our 963 to the new style stock rolls and water pump bearings four years ago and it was money well spent. We have ran over about 4,000 acres since we converted it without any problems or greasing.

I had the same idea you have and found out that the bearing in the update kit is almost the same outside diameter as the original stalk roll. I was going to turn out the original rolls but I felt the front of the original roller would be too thin and could break out under a load. I do think that you could adapt a gauge wheel bearing from a jd or kinze planter into the old rolls without too much trouble if you felt it would do the job. Personally, I think they might be a little light duty for this job but it would be interesting to see how they would hold up. Adapting the old blocks with a bore for the inner bearing race_stub shouldnt be a big deal because the grease passage can serve as the pilot hole for the new bore. Only problems I can see would be if the back of the blocks and the front of the stalk rolls are wore off too bad. Really need those stalk rolls back as far as they can go to provide a good seal back at the gearboxes. On a tangent here, Shoup pins in the front blocks are replaceable and CIH is not, for what its worth.

Well thanks a ton for the replies guys. I'm thinking I might try my own fix (buy a new bearing and do the machining necessary ) on one row and see how it lasts for a year. I'll either leave the other rows and gease them lots or put new bushings in and get another year to see if the conversion works. If it doesn't last I'll have to bite the bullet and buy the complete update kits.

Keep us posted Mac. I know I sure would be interested in knowing how the one row (you rework to the new bearing) works out. Good luck.

Another thought. I'm pretty sure you can buy the update kit without the new knives. Good luck

A recipitating saw works great to remove the bushings. 2 cuts 180 degrees apart and it will almost fall out.

Not to be a smart a$$. But what about just getting one of those lincoln rechargeable grease guns. It takes less than 10 minutes to grease the head on our 883, and I only do it 3 times a day. Chads
