We used to Custom harvest up until 1995. Every year we cut as much as 8000 ac. Malt Barley in Idaho. Most of the harvesting was with Case Axial Flows. We used a small wire concave in the front and two large wire concaves in the rear for most settings. Some 'Two Row' barley varieties, required all three cancaves be 'lArge Wire' as they were extremely sensitive. We also opened the concave upto around 2.5 on the indicator and slowed the Rotor down to around 600-700rpm. Malt barley is very easy to 'skin or crack' Most Barley buyers tolorate very little if any damage. While I'm not familier with JD's new STS design, I suppose it should be approached the same, however JD rep.s could be consulted here in Idaho Dealerships at Bonneville Co. Equipment, Idaho Falls, Id. at 208-522-6372. Hope this helps. CM
