Combines 9650STS Wheat straw

I'd like to see wheat threshed with the round bar concave. I thought they are only for corn and beans. You don't have to worry about throwing over wheat with an STS, no matter how much straw. At least we never had any trouble throwing over wheat with the machine set right. Just run what the combine takes in. But I would be really curious how that baling works behind a rotor. We tried a windrow once last summer and decided it wasn't worthwhile getting out the baler. I've heard it can be done.

I'm hoping that I can find someone this year who tries to bale straw behind an STS, or who will at least drop a 50 ft windrow to see what the quality is. I've talked with several people in Montana who would like to run a rotary machine, but they don't want to risk their straw supply to try it.

last May, I helped a friend harvest about 12,000 acres of wheat in Texas. He sold the straw to a straw board factory that needed 10 inch straw. We ran 10 9750's with 36' drapers and one 9610 w_30. They ran 3 big square balers behind the combines with no complaints about the straw. There were certain settings we had to use. I can't remember the exact, but I think the rotor had to run no faster than 700 and the concave had to be set at no closer than 17. These are pretty close if not the exact settings. We had to be careful with the ground speed, but did a good threshing job and the sample was acceptible. There was'nt much dockage at the elevator. The whitecaps were hard to get clean, but a half inch of rain helped that a lot. The wheat yielded in the mid 30's so it was decent. Hope this helps.

Thanks a lot. I'm going to keep your comments on file. I may have some customers this year that will want to give it a try.
