The decals and the color of the red paint is the main difference. We are running a 8590 and also have a 9700 that has most of the 9720 updates. We had Terry redo the rotor on the 8590 this fall. but it rained so much we didn't get to use in the green stemed beans. I do beleive the rotor takes less power now. The 9700 is a 1980 model, we have owned it most of it's life.

Thanks for your response lee. What are the strengths and weaknesses of these machinesIJ Having had the experience of running your machines for many years, would you recommend these models for purchaseIJ What advantages do the newer rotaries offerIJ I appreciate the advice.

The combine has a lot of capacity, it could use more power in muddy conditions. The 8590 has around 3500 hrs on it and still seems to be in good shape. I like the looks of the newer combines they look a little easier to work on though this one is not bad once you get used to it. I did talk to a couple of guys than ran one of the newer one's against the R 72, both said they were impressed with the machine. I would not be afraid to own one of the older one's or one of the newer one's.
