The special nut things for locking up the flex part of the head can also lock up the skid plates. I leave the skid plates hanging for wheat and just lock up the knife. It is much easier to do and the plates hanging down dont hurt anything. If I am by myself I use a front end loader to lift the knife just enough to get those nuts started or I set the knife on the edge of a low bed trailer by lowering the header. Dont overdo it you dont want to bend anything. 4 or 5 inches is about all you need to get those tower nut things on.
