The 973 flex will harvest wheat with no problem at all. Just simply look the header out of flex mode and it will operate just like any N.H. 971 auger header. A draper header (Macdon _ Honeybee) are much nicer though.

The special nut things for locking up the flex part of the head can also lock up the skid plates. I leave the skid plates hanging for wheat and just lock up the knife. It is much easier to do and the plates hanging down dont hurt anything. If I am by myself I use a front end loader to lift the knife just enough to get those nuts started or I set the knife on the edge of a low bed trailer by lowering the header. Dont overdo it you dont want to bend anything. 4 or 5 inches is about all you need to get those tower nut things on.
