Combines adding tachs to 8570

As far as I know you cant tie another tach into the existing wiring harness but you could add a shaft monitor similiar to the agtron one... I added something similar to my 760 to monitor cleaning fan speed and a extra rear beater speed. as for the engine rpm you could again go to a tach that runs off of the alternator or a magnetic pick up on the vibration dampener. I'll post back what company makes the shaft monitor unit i got in the 760... Hope this helps, Ed

You might even be able to go off the existing notched disk if you go to a pulse sending unit and tach that you can calibrate which is whats already on there. less problems than magnetic pick up... dont have to worry about the magnet flyin off

I have wonted the engine rpm and ground speed at all time on a deferent display then the one that is there now, every where I have look I have not found what I wont, But the fieldstar unit I think will display engine rpm and ground speed, and it would be nice to have yield monitor to. I think the 8780 use the same engine and ground speed pickup as 8570, been a while since looked at that to be sure. The wiring is deferent though. I have done research on constant rotor speed like is on 8780 to modify for 8570, am sure it can be put on 8570 with some modifications. I have not spent the money to get part to try it yet. In the 9690 parts list I sow that they have a part n for complete rotor asy n71395415, how dose this compare to St. John rotor price wiseIJ Best Regards Dee

Swtvid: It sure would be nice if Agco had add-ons like extra tachs for rotor and engine rpms, constant speed rotor kit for 8570s and a fan upgrade to the new fan on the 9000 series combines. If they're not going to make these improvements available, I guess we'll have to do it on our own, so any information on adding tachs will be greatly appreciated. I'm really interested in your constant speed kit for a 8570, please keep me informed. As far as the difference in price between St. John rotor kit and a new sytle Massey I have no idea. I'm convinced Terry's rotor is going to do a better job in small grains than the Massey so I never checked that out. I do know that it is cheaper to get St. John Welding to modify the rotor than to have Stewart Steel do it. Neil

sidewinder: Thanks for the thoughts on tachs, all information is welcome. If you think of anything else please pass it on to me. Neil

Neil, Adding an engine tach wouldn't be that difficult. You would need to tee into the wires for the magnetic pickup on flywheel housing. I don't know of a place that handles tachs aftermarket. I could get one from my work. The electronic tach only needs power from the ignition switch run terminal and signal wire from the pickup. Calibration could be done by checking rpm on the monitor. I only know the smaller Cummins engines (3.9 and 5.9) but, they are probably the same. Rotor rpm would be a little more difficult. One could try an engine tach for that but, it wouldn't be very accurate.
