Combines Adjustable precleaner in STS

loewen has them. Here is what they say about them. "The NEW loewen STS Adjustable Precleaner offers you greater flexibility and performance! John Deere STS combines include a rigid precleaner that is pre-set for corn. This wide setting causes loss of material through the precleaner when small grain crops are harvested. The loewen Adjustable Precleaner allows you to fine tune your louvres for the specific crop that you are harvesting - providing you with better separation and a cleaner sample. Adjustments are made with a crank that fits over the adjustment gear - count your turns for precise settings. The Adjustable Precleaner features Nylon Cushions in each wire hole to reduce friction, wear and breakage. Individual replacement louvres, wires and nylon parts make repairs easy!"

We put one in our 9650 STS and were very happy with it. Cuts down on the returns because the chaffer is not getting overloaded, thereby increasing capacity. Definitely a good investment.

I'd like to know how the addition of the adjustable precleaner reduced the load on the chaffer and reduced the returns. Thanks

It reduces the amount of trash going over the bottom sieve which lets the grain seperate better!

The non-adjustable precleaner is set way too far open for small grains. (I have no experience with corn). Because it is so far open, there is not enough air under it to keep the chaff (MOG) suspended. All this excess chaff ends up falling onto the sieve and overloading it, thereby increasing the returns. The precleaner should not be open any farther than the chaffer. Having the precleaner less open also keeps the chaff more suspended when it reaches the chaffer, allowing it to operate more efficiently also.
