Combines AFX 1480

In soybeans the guys shut the back of the chaffer, the chopper plugs it. So your like a short shoe. I always thought the elephant ears were cupped the wrong way, they force the crop out instead of pulling it in. The AFX just pulls it in like an auger where the elephant ears force it out to the vanes then in. In theory the cone should last longer in a AFX. I run a short shoe 1 1_8 short finger chaffer with a loewen 3_8 round hole bottom sieve in soybeans. The chaffer keeps the trash out and the round hole bottom sieve cleans the beans, no pods go through the round holes just beans. Any time you can make it feed through better it's going to thresh better. Thats what makes the John Deere full finger head so great, it feeds smooth. The JD combines look smooth because of the full finger head, You don't want to know what I think of the combines. Your clean grain elevator has enough capacity for beans, AFX, Go for it.

a friend of mine run a chunk of steal in his 1688 and it distroyed it and he went back with a afx and said it would really eat and afx is not much higher in price than the other two roters

I put a AFX in my 1680 long sieve this fall, it is just a pleasure to drive now, the only noise you hear now is the feeder chain rattle. We had very heavy wheat swaths this fall, some heavy canola swaths with long stalks, the soybeans were short and the corn was not bad, some laying down due to drought, the rotor handled all crops with ease, it will not combine like a rotor JD but a lot better than the speacility rotor that was in there. As for the short shoe I wouldn't worry about that, it has lots of capacity and the pleasure you will have with the new rotor will more than make up for a slight loss of speed if you had a long sieve. There is quite a few around us that put them in this fall, same results with every one. Only one with a 2188 had to put in a new kidney, for some reason the frontbearing wouldn't last in the old kidney. Good luck Scouter

How did the afx perform in wheatIJ We usually have dry grain before the plant is ready and the specialty doesn't do quite as well as the standard in these conditions. You may not have that problemn as you knock yours down first. Have had terrible time with green plant beans the last two years so I am interested in the afx. Thanks for your time.

Our wheat was mostly nice and ripe this fall, just 4 ft of straw flat on the ground in places. We had an unbelieveable crop, some places hitting up to 80 bu of spring wheat, never seen before. It was a real test for the rotor, no rumble, all you could hear was the feeder house chain making some noise. We did our soybeans when they were testing 10 to 13 but stems were green but they were short, only knee high so never heard any noise at all, edible beans were very short so no test. Neighbours did heavy oats with same results in a 2188.Makes them a pleasure to drive and should help on wear inside, also less fuel I would think. I was worried about the transfer vanes in the cone and cage as I only have the lighter ones but never rolled any over!!!! I just have to find a nice second hand 2388 now to put the rotor in as it would be nice to have more power but haven't had any rain this fall so might not need so much power next year. Why don'd we hear more about the MARlIN style elephant earsIJ They were designed for hard to feed crops.

I agree, as these Marlin ears apparently do the same thing, feed better and take away the growling.

I ran the Marlin ears from the fellow that designed them, they were a lot better, less power and less fuel but still was no good in green stem edible beans and soybeans, tough wheat and oat straw there was lots of banging, now the material just goes thru with the new rotor, it doesn't seem to get in trouble in the middle of the rotor for some reason, I am using the same concaves and grates as last yr so the design of the rotor has been the only change, everyone has found the same when changing rotors in all crops. I'm just glad it worked as the rotor is not cheap but at least we are not damaging concaves and transfer vanes like before. Scouter
