Combines Air cleaner

They are probably plugged with straw inside of the asperator, I just installed a kit in our R62 that involved drillng a 2.75 inch hole in the aspirator and when I did this I found it to be full of matted up straw that will never come out of there by just blowing it out. But with this big hole that I drilled on the side I was able to get inside and clean it out just like new. I think you could just drill a hole in the side and then make a cover to put over the hole when you are done then you can use this hole to check it once and awhile. This way you have the hole where the asperator hose hooks up, and the bigger hole that you drilled out to get a air hose in there to agitate the straw to get it out of there. If you do drill the hole make sure you don't penetrate to far so that you wreck the plastic inserts that are inside of there. I am not sure if this update kit will work with the air cooled engines you will have to check that out if you are interested in installing one on your machine, it costs about 20.00 dollars for the kit.

I remove the upper part of the air cleaner every year for a thorough cleaning of those plastic things but never find straw in them. They were full of caked mud when I bought the machine. Is there a possibility the seal between the air cleaner and engine cover is leakingIJ Tom in MN

check to see if the asperators are working. With the suction tube off, crank the eng and run at above idle. Take a hand full of very light chaff of even fine dust and SlOWlY pour into the inlet of the asp. The asp, if working , will expell the debris out the suction port. There should also be a slight discharge of air out of the tube. The idea below of drilling the hole to clean is an excellent idea. One can simply put a piece of duct tape over the plug removed by a hole saw in the crudest fix. With a little imagination a simple latch can be fabricated. Dan has some posts in either the old post or in the TIPS section to the left, then click on upgrades and look around. He covers an upgrade to the asperators. Yes, you can bet your asp. that this situation can be improved. (later combines did incorporate a larger 14" air filter to lessen service in this area)

The 93 and 94 had small air breathers installed at the factory. I had the same problem until a custom cutter said the factory will pay for a larger air breather. My dealer got me one and the larger element solved the problem. The straw in the precleaner fins was not a problem. Check with your dealer. The factory should give it to you no charge. Good luck.

Nothing wrong with small air cleaners if the asperator is washed out well. I would suggest installing the larger prescreen though. Click on upgrades to the left for I expanded quite alot on what I found to work the very best. I would suggest if you still have the steal pipes leeding to exhaust pipe to change them to rubber for that will help prevent the possibility of ripping barb off of asperator. Be careful not to use to much pressure when asperator is in a bucket of water for you could move the swirly things. If you move them just push them back when all done washing. Of course allow asperator to dry well before putting back into dusty condition.

What we did to correct this problem was to put a stack on the top of the asperator, probably 3 feet or so, and put a turbo 2 on top of that. We went from blowing out our air filter every couple hours to once every second day. Still not great but a heck of alot better than before. Make sure to secure the pipe extention with an anchor to the grain bin though, as this is very top heavy and can blow over on a windy day.

When we put on the larger air breather, we went to cleaning once a day or less and the engine worked much better. We never had dirt in the swirl chambers, only in the smaller filter. A smaller filter is a handicap for the Duetz V8. Ours runs like a charm. Ask your dealer. The factory should provide it for you. They know the smaller one is inadequate. Good luck.

Cleaning once a day or so is too often for me. If you got the asperator working like a clean one on the 12" system you would have x amount more room for dirt with the 14" and that is about it in my opinion. I just about got a couple just installed 14" systems shuved you no where when they plugged right away. I headed out with my water manometer and found out what was wrong with the 14" systems. With my instruments hooked up looking for vacuum where I needed it and little vacuum where I didn't want it I found the original system a better match. The 14" can be made to work like it should. I'm very glad you are happy with what you have. I am a dealer and have been around various asperators for many years and have a fair idea how these systems work and why they do not work.
