Combines Air Foil Chaffer now whatIJ

We run a harvest services air foil chaffer for ten years now in our 850. The chaffer goes in the top slot. Take out the middle sieve. The front lower sieve should be a round hole 5_8" sieve and the regular bottom sieve should be left in place but remove the returns loovers. Did they give you the complete kitIJ Airfoil, air deflector, and rear door. We run the factory air deflector in the lowest possible position. The only adjustment left to make is the bottom sieve and fan speed.

complete kitIJ Nope. Never even offered anything like it. I thought the 5_8 inch hole sieve was for corn_beans more than small grains. I don't have a sieve like that in the bottom. Do I need oneIJ My bottom sieve has two adjustments. The back of the bottom sieve goes thru the rethrasher. Would I still remove the returns louversIJ What is the reason for doing thatIJ Has it cleaned effectively by thenIJ Hmmm. Thanks for the help.

On the previous page of this talk show 09_24_04 cookie jar copied a Massey document entitled "Initial Settings for Small Grain and Grain Sorgham" This is a good place to start when setting up your combine. On a 3 screen machine, grain that falls through the front part of the top screen goes directly to the tank, so the front of the top screen must be set about the same as the bottom screen. An air foil chaffer screen alone will allow chaffy grain into your tank. The solution for an air chaffer, is to install another screen in the front of the bottom screen slot. It is also common to use a round hole screen in this position. The above Massey document give recommended sizes vs crops. While you're at it, you can replace the entire bottom screen with a round hole screen appropriate to the crop. If you're fabricating your own, don't forget dividers front to back. I've used triangular sections of wood for dividers, as in the old combines. Before fooling with air foil chaffers, it's best to first follow Massey's recommendations, as I've found they give excellent results. Also make sure your fan air deflectors aren't messing up your flow.

You need the round hole sieve in front of the bottom sieve because with the middle sieve removed the grain that falls through the front of the air foil chaffer goes directly to the clean grain auger. If you are doing only wheat, you can use a smaller round hole sieve, probably a 3_8 or 7_16's. I use a 5_8's because I also do soybeans and this way I never have to change the sieve. There should be an air deflector placed vertically between the bottom sieve and the back of the last open slot of the air foil chaffer. The last 10" of the airfoil should be blanked off. There should also be door across the back of the sieve area so that all the air has to go up through the chaffer. The reason you remove the loovers in the return section of the lower sieve is that with the door in place the return area could plug off and you would never see it.
