The M3 is a good jump from the F3 and the R40 is a jump again from the M3. As for the engine, some swear by them and others swear at them. Deutz engines MUST be kept clean and BlOWN OUT atleast once a day in soybean. And if you get an oil leak, whether it is engine oil or diesel, it MUST be fixed immediately, or you start to plug cooling fins and run the risk of overheating a cyl. or fire. They have fan belts like the M3 has and you can run the same risk of breaking that. The Fan itself is much more CRITICAl on the Deutz, with age, it wears thin and doesn't cool as well. And finally if you have a major engine problem, price a new Deutz engine before you price the replacement parts on the engine in the combine. The R40 is alot more machine than the M3, but in my opinion the Deutz is alot less than an AC or Cummins.

I agree with the other John about size steps but I will take issue with his comments regarding Deutz cooling. I blow out the engine fins once a year, which is certainly adequate on my farm. Perhaps cleaning would be required if there was an oil or fuel leak but so far everything on my engine is dry. In my opinion the air-cooled engine requires a great deal less maintenance than any other engine I have owned. Tom in MN

Haven't had any major problems with keeping the cooling fins clean. The head temp sensor on the left side will tell you when you need cleaning. Typical plug point is on the last cylinder (PTO end of engine). Requires removal of the cowling on the end of the engine and under manifold for proper cleaning, a half hour job maybe once a year. The oil cooler and hydraulic cooler require daily cleaning with compressed air-5 minutes. The intercooler on the other hand is difficult to clean properly.Bought my machine used and still have noy succeeded in getting it completely unplugged. Don't be afraid of the Deutz. Rob.
