This season I had the opportunity to work with the 2208 heads on a pair 2188 machines. From what I observed, they did a good job picking and appeared to be well constructed. However, there is a potential problem I noticed with cob breakage. Variety may have played a roll in this instance but never-the-less, 7 out of 10 cobs were broken, split or smashed before they reached the impellers. I attributed the cob breakage to the way the cross auger feeds most of the crop to the center of the feeder house. These 2188 machines had the o.e.m. three strand feeder chains. On one machine we removed the three chain and installed a 2 strand system. On the other combine, we removed every other alternating slat. Also, we attached rubber paddles on each side of the center of the cross auger on each machine. The result was noticeably less cob breakage with both combines. One feature of the Gorden Rotor bars is to get the cobs through the rotor with less breakage. Of course it is much more difficult to keep the cob intact when they are already ground up in the feeder house. Other customers Ive talked with, who have 3 strand chains and do not have the 2208, dont seem to have the cob breakage issue. I am interested to hear other comments about this subject as I do not have enough data to form a definite conclusion. Otherwise it looks to me the 2208 is a very nice corn head. Consider putting some Gorden Bars under the Christmas tree this year. Tax deductable as well!
