Combines Anyone tried an aftermarket chopper

We used a Redekop straw chopper on our last 3 CIH combines with very good results. If it is absolutley critical that you get a good chop and spread on 25' or more then a aftermarket chopper is a must. The Redekop unit can be inconvenient if you change from spreading to dropping a windrow often as it must be removed from the combine to drop the straw. Our unit was driven off of the righthand side of the combine and would swing open to adjust the sieves. Redekop is located in Saskatoon, Sask., Canada and the tele. phone n is 306-931-6664. I know of a used unit in Manitoba that is in good cond. on a dealer's lot as well.

Redekop has a web site. www.redekopmfg.com By far these are the best aftermarket choppers sold. I had to detune ours so that we wouldn't spread into the uncut grain.

Redekop has a web site too. Another advantage of the Redekop is that it spreads both straw and chaff. Down side is that it does take quite a few hp to operate the chopper. Another chopper is the TSR which is closer to the OEM design.

I would ask your CNH dealer for his carryout price for the complete chopper. I just purchased one for $3,600 US dollars which included all the parts to make it work including the new outside knife adjustment. It has the tall knives and works great with a 30 header. I can not tell much difference in HP needed. Be sure that the aftermarkets include the pulley needed on the gearbox for the chopper. Some do not include that in their price which will make them more expensive than a CNH. Another $800 or so dollars should get one installed. Don't be afraid to make an offer. Most dealers will deal on parts also, especially when they cost 3K dollars or more. I was told it takes 12 hours or so to install one.

Bought a TSR chopper last year, been well satisfied. Its on a 1460 with 20 ft head, chops as good as CaseIh.Cost was around 2600.

My dealer says he can't find a kit or anyway to put together a kit to install a chopper in my 1680. Where did you get your chopperIJ Thanks, Pat

The new 2003 2388 chopper will fit in your 1680. My dealer just installed one in my 1989 1680 and it is perfect. I even have the outside adjusting lever which is quite handy.

For the person whose dealer couldn't find the chopper kit number look on page 49 of the CIH publication "Axial Flow Combines Product Support Kits" 2002 edition and you will see at the bottom of the page "Complete Straw Chopper Kits for Previous Model Axial Flow Combines". They give kit numbers by model and serial numbers. For the later 1460 and 1480 models they are the same as the early 1600 series choppers.
