Definitely a shame. Operator should have checked his lights before even thinking of driving on the highway. I'm glad the two in the car will be ok. Wonder what kinda combine it wasIJ lance

How much do you suppose having no lights will cost that guyIJ

It is bad any time someone gets hurt, but if they couldn't see the combine wasn't running the speed limit, could they have seen the lightsIJ

Tom, it will probably cost him in a lawsuit the price of a new R65.

Does anyone else think that some farmers are really stupid for not putting proper lighting on the back of their equipmentIJ In addition to the legal liability, wouldn't one feel terribly responsible for such an accident, when $50 or so would equip you very well with some big lights on the rear of any equipment going down the roadIJ Irv

This is why it is illegal to transport farm equipment on the road after dark in New Jersey. . . no matter what kind of lights you have.

Yes, situations such as this one could easily be avoided! I don't know if the grandfather clause with the one light in the back would have been enough or not (it was burnt out) but it was still idiotic for the person to move the combine at the time of night! It's just not worth it! I believe it was a Gleaner F combine. A stitch in time save nine and like you guys said he might be out of the farming business the way people are sue happy! It's hard enough to make a go of it farming and then you have someone like this person making a bad name for us! I know you learn by mistake sometimes but you never know when the one mistake might be the last! Hopefully all will be well though. ;-)

From the picture it looks like an l2 or M2, rear tires are too big for an F. If this is the case, the combine would have had the two red tail lights and flashers standard equipment (I suppose the very late model F would have too). I'd also imagine like most older combines it has a worn out or worn off SMV sticker. Just irks me how someone will say there's no point in turning the flasher lights on a header around in the proper position or plugging them in on an implement behind a tractor when they are on there anyway. Their reasoningIJ "If they can't see what I've got to begin with, they aren't going to see a flashing light." In fact, neighbor just told me that yesterday when I pointed out the wires to the lights on his JD no-til drill were disconnected. If any of our implements have lights, we plug them in, and I think we're about the only ones for miles around with lights on the headers (25' flex and 8 row hugger) that turn them out to their proper position. Others say they will get broke doing that, but isn't that why they all swivelIJ

We had an accident here last year where a lady was talking on her cell phone and drove right inside the rear of a new 2388 in broad daylight. They had to use the jaws of life to get the car out of the combine and her out of the car, totaled both machines, big insurance claim, she got sited. Combine operator just felt a bump.
