Yes, for small grain, it should be down, for corn it should be up, or out, and for beans, I usually also take it out.

I have had fits with awns in my F as well. Close cylinder somewhat tighter, speed it up, and set air up a little more, slide walkers back just beyond half way(I usually use width of index finger). It helps, but the only real solution is to raise grain without awns. Sometimes that does not work well for yield purposes. I have a real deer problem, no awns, no grain.
