Combines AWS Air Reel

They are made in Ontario also, there are not many dealers in the US they have been concetrating on the Canadian market. I heard that Crary is making a version like the AWS for the US and they have a ton of dealers in the Dakotas and Mn. After all they are made in Fargo.

Yes Crary does make an air real unfortually it is not make like the AWS there are 3 main things that I think I would like better about the AWS system 1. Direct drive off the combine, more efficent use of power that running it off the head. 2. The way the system also blows air on top the the feederhouse to keep it clean currently I know people with the crary system that need to stop several times a day and clean the chaff of the top of the feeder house beacuse the fan blows some of the trash up on top. 3. By the looks of the pictures it is a system you add on you use your existing real the crary system in a completly new real and is quite spendy because of it.

If you buy a new header less the reel and then put a Crary on it will be less money than adding a AWS reel to a new header with the reel included. Also you can put the blower any where you can find a place to drive it, just like the AWS. The blowers are very similar. Both require almost 1 horse power per foot of header. On some combines the header clutch can't handle this much pull. On my 9720 White I mounted the blower to the main drive line just to the right of the cab. It ran whenever the seperator was running. I could start and stop the header without stopping the blower. Blowers run about 5000 rpm so you can see why they are hard to start. 0-5000 rpm in 5 secondsIJ Crary started out useing belts like AWS but went to a gear box. AWS will evolve to that eventually too. 0-5000 rpm to hard on belts. It all boils down to where's the most convient place to locate the blower while keeping maintenence to a minimum and making it easy to take the header off and on.

I had a crary and switched to an AWS. In only it's second year I seized the gearbox on the crary tighter than hell $2200.00 later I was back up and running again. I know my AWS fan only runs at 4200 rpm and I have all kinds of air It uses banded belts and I have never had a problem with them over heating. Have you used both systems personallyIJ

I currently have 2 crary systems, the blower part works good, the reel system is a high wearing deal, In looking at the AWS website and talking to them -- you can have the blower either on the combine or down on the header andthe nice part is that you can use the org. JD etc reel, I do think the AWS sys give a better angle for the air flow also, they also state they have baffles that equalize the air flow thru-out the header

Does the air manifold shell any soybeans outIJ I would think its location in front of the reel would cause some pod shelling due to it running down in the beans ahead of the reel.

I talked with my friend this weekend who works at Crary. They now make the CWS. It is the Crary Wind System. It is similar to the AWS. I asked him why are they doing that over the Finger Air Reel and he stated that the CWS will be good for the people who don't by new heads very often. Where as anyone looking at buying a new head will want to go with the Finger Air Reel. They too use the high drive or the gearbox version to drive. So Crary does make both. They make a very good product and I would definetly stick with the Crary. Also they have a great dealer base, so service shouldn't tough to find.

Funny how crary now makes what you call a cws maybe AWS is on to something here. I think I'll take a harder look at it. Don't forget we as farmers need company's do have competition in the market place.

I have both a crary and an AWS system on combines I own and I prefer the AWS system over the Crary system. First of all a drive belt every 4 or five years is a heck of alot cheaper than a gearbox renewal. The gearbox runs at an extremely high temperature and the spider gears turning the reel are extremely noisy on the Crary. Buying the AWS system out of Canada gives the US. buyer an advantage with a 1.60 equivalent Canadian dollar. Care should be taken when engaging the header by not starting it at full engine rpm. This only makes sense. The belt drive is alot more forgiving than the gearbox drive especially if you slip and forget to do this. You can order the AWS system with electric actuators to control nozzel pitch and wind speed from the cab that are far better quality devices than those used on the Crary.
