It isnt a bad idea to go by your book. The only thing I do is cut the old belt in two and get it out of the way.I dont use the special tool, I just spread the driven sheave with a long screwdriver when I am feeding the belt around it. Spray penetrating oil on belt when you go by the driveshaft u-joint so it doesnt nick up the belt. Open the drive sheave all the way when you get ready to slide the belt around the driven sheave.
