Combines Bad news for V belts

That IS impressive! If belts start to fail prematurely, the engineers can always "design" (copy) and elaborate system of drive shafts and right-angle gearboxes, not unlike, hmmmmm, a Midieval Castle drawbridge mechanism! I do have to say that these Cummins are some impressive engines. After getting our pump recalibrated last summer on our 52, that mill is bulletproof - she won't pull down for anything. I can't imagine topping it off with electronic control too.

The 4" cogged belts used to run the superchargers on top fuel dragsters handle well over 800HP just to spin the blower. Belt's are amazingly strong.

I believe you are right. I though about responding to that post but I believe 90% plus of the guys got the general idea. I certainly wouldn't condemn the mechanic but it could be brought to his attention. I've been where that mechanic is and still am there in hundreds of thousands of ways. A electronic governer can really get you the power or torque when you want it for a combine. There are some dynos with fancy electronic box that will convert the torque into HP for you. I believe the rated RPM HP he quoted is right for I bet he had the torque bar set to clutchshaft rated speed. I believe the HP climbed some when pulling down further but not near that much. The torque definitely went up greatly and the HP would climb some also when the torque rise is designed to come in within a couple hundred engine RPM. My dyno torque bar gets set to torque position and never leaves. I then pull down the combine or tractor engine and record torque and speed at many RPM's. I then do the math to find my HP and or torque rise. Gleaner publishes great info on dyno testing these machines. It'll be fun to get in one of those 2000 R62 to fell the power but I don't think it will fell as good of the liquid cooled R72's for they all have electronic governers. Ain't to worried about the drive belts either for they have been pretty well proven on the big guy and they are the same belts. Take it EZ now and have a great day.
