Deadeye, this is a subject that can have many opinions..Don't know the setup of your machine but will share what I do with mine. The slotted grates with no bars mounted on them are less damaging to the straw.you can move the straw through with less revolutions by advancing the vanes but have not noticed a big difference doing that..cover plates on the first grate to allow less aggressive rotor setting will help to some extent..As with all combine settings everything is a compromise and so you just do some small things and each will make a small difference but added together mount up...We finally take the spreaders off to windrow the straw and bale it when the dew comes on..Makes nice tight bales that way and really cuts down on short stem losses..just my 2 cents

I have guys bale right behind my 2188 and they love it.I change the 2 rear concave's and it makes wonderful straw to bale with round or square baler's. Brian

I have seen a guy go the steel shop and have a piece of flat steel formed in a curve and weld it to an old beat up key stock grate. This gave a smooth surface for the straw to exit out of the rotor cage. JWK

I put in different concave's in the rear. They are for wheat, doesn't chew the straw up as bad.You can change all 4,but the guy I bought mine from says just change the rear 2.
