Combines baling straw from a gleaner rotary combine

We bale behind the R's, in oats, with very good results. Pull the spreader, pull the knives, run the chopper slow. I think that the hyper mods have improved straw quality by allowing for better flow in the rotor. We also made a curved panel that we bolt onto the left side of the combine, just below the discharge chute. This helps to move the straw to the middle of the combine, and out of the wheel track. Maybe the baler gets some chaff that way as well. Overall, very pleased with the straw coming out. Irv

We baled behind an N series years ago. Didn't do anything but pull the spreader. We baled early in the morning when the straw was tough so it didn't break up any more. Worked fine, especially if you are feeding a little of it because it is partially chopped.

What we found works well with all rotaries is a low profile pickup on your baler. We put all the straw through the R 65 and have no trouble getting most of the straw. We use glyphos to dessicate the straw and kill the milkweed so if it gets to dry (after 7 or 8 days) you loose a little more.

I second that about the lo-pro pickup on the baler. I have one of the few Hesston centerline small-square balers around here, and I have gotten some custom jobs baling wheat straw behind a rotary. I picked up straw that a new New Holland 570 couldn't. Made nice bales, too. Very popular with the bedding customers.
