Combines Battery problems

I had a 2001 9750 combine which worked great the first year but just before the second season began to have problems with starting due to low batteries. My dealer came to check the problem and it was traced to the stereo in the cab. The stereo was replaced and the problem continued. The problem was a current draw when the key was off not bad batteries. Got through harvest by disconnecting battery ground wire everynight. Over the winter problem was diagnosed as bad alternator. Alternator was replaced problem seems to be corrected now.I was told the alternator cost about $1,000.00 CAN.

try disconnecting the earth lead from the battery connect a multi meter between the battery terminal and the lead and see what current is running from the battery with everything off...now disconnect any thing still with memory back up ie clock on radios, disconnect alternater.if still current running start pulling fuses or relays till current draw stops this way you will pinpoint the culprit we have fitted deep cycle batteries which seems to handle a draw down alot better.has for batteries blowing up normally through to much charge been pushed in to them
