the n1 piston is the flywheel side, (n6 in most engines. ) Why pull the pumpIJ Check the timing maybe, but it it not like the AMBAC units. Some of these units had an electrical wire running to the pump, others did not, and it it does check to see if the wire to the pump fuel retard solinoid is receiving current DURING cranking. IF not repair. If it does not have the wire the throttle must be in the full rpm postion during cranking to allow it to retard itself, of course pull back as soon as engine starts. You can check the pump by pulling and injector and line and reconnecting it and allow it to pop as you crank over the engine, this is a poor mans pump stand. Spray should be clean and atomized with not a drip or stream allowable. Injectors, maybe, a reason but usually on older engines a bit lower compression and slower cranking speed is the culprit. On Deutz engines make sure the tappet clearance is .006 cold after standing shut off for at least 6 hours. I would suggest also checking out the flame heater or thermostart, many were equipped with this and it works great, if it is functional, check it out, it actually burns diesel in the intake to heat. The other means is to install an auto either such as late model units have. We usually close the holes up in the nozzel meter device to only allow about half of the shot to be deliverd, this prevents knocking and allows a longer slower injection of the ether. Hope this helps.
