Had a hard time once with a 30ft drive chain on the auger only because it had a little wobble the chain had a tight spot as I spun it by hand, once I noticed this I set the chain at the tightest spot and had no more problems. Could this be an issue in your caseIJ Too much pull on that shaft will weaken it as it whips then breaks. I have had lots of problems with the distribution auger shafts as well breaking because of the amount of load from having to tension a belt that runs the shoe,walkers,elevators, and augers
