Combines Buying a Used 9650STS What Should I look ForIJ

"the dealer is offering no warranty (other than he guarantees it to work)" That was a real sticking point for us whe we bought. If the machine is in such good shape and you have done all this work, then why no warrantyIJ We went to another dealer that was willing to stand behind his machine for the first crop harvested (Wheat in our case).

That's a bit of a "sticking-point" with me too, however, the machine is being sold on consignment on behalf of an estate, so there probably isn't much of a margin for the selling dealer. I can buy this combine for about $30,000CDN less than competitive machines on dealers lots; - the "catch" is that I have to pay "cash" which, in this case, I (along with my banker) can do!

Didn't know that it was consignment, and I understand the dealer's predicament now. 30K would purchase an awful lot of parts.......

It depends a lot on the crop it was in. Corn wears at least twice as much as wheat. Beans wear at least four times as much as wheat. A good indicator is the fountain auger (if it hasn't been replaced already) and its tube. Does it have a new small grain concaveIJ They are not cheap and used to last only about 400 hours. If it was in wheat only it could last 2000 hours before it gets wholy. If it was in beans only you will find wholes and folded augers in the clean grain system as early as 800 hours.

You're right; - 30K would buy a lot of parts. Since my original post, I found out that this combine never did beans, although it comes with a 600 series flex (25 foot) and 8 row narrow cornhead. I'm taking a JD mechanic along tomorrow to give it a second-look; - I'll probably buy it!

We have a 9650STS with 1159 engine hours and 975 separator hours. Three weeks ago we spent about $7,000.00US for new parts. The machine is a model year 2000 and we have spent a total of $656.59 on it till now. As for things to look for: 1. Check feed accelerator wear strips for wear. 2. Check rotor and concave for damage. 3. Check clean grain lower auger and boot for wear. 4. Check stationary chopper knives. 5. Check grain bin loading auger and tube for wear. 6. Check unloading auger trough for wear, check near the vertical auger. 7. Check vertical and horizontal unload augers wear. Check the vertical at the top through the inspection hole. 8. Ask the dealer if updated software has been installed. 9. Ask the dealer if the chopper update has been installed. Hope this helps.

Only $7,000. Thats weird. Somebody on the NH board says maintainence costs average $14,000 for every 500-600 hrs. Anyways, glad to see the truth told. Just under $8,000 is pretty good. The qoute I got from the local Case dealer who rebuilds CIH combines is $8,000 to $12,000 for every 1,000 sep hours depending on how deep you go.
