I do not have a cage sweep and I had no problems until last year when bean stems plugged above the pivot arms. Installing 2 cage covers--1 next to each pivot arm in the thresher area- stopped plugging. Tom in MN
Tom What model machine are you runningIJ How much of the cage sweep did you removeIJ Just the sweep arms or the entire assemblyIJ I'm experimenting with smaller versions of cage covers to stop the plugging process at the concave arm area without blocking any more of the cage than necessary. So far, blocking one row of grating on the right and two rows on the left looks promising. Gamaman
I run an R5 and have the cage sweep removed except for the bars it rolls on. Didn"t take long to remove them. Have them hanging in shed. Have never used them for corn, wheat or soybeans. Have had no problem.
I have an R60 with P1 processor and the entire cage sweep assembly is in a pile waiting for the scrap guy to pick it up. Are you referring to vertical rows of gratingIJ Are you installing those covers only on the thresher sideIJ I have installed full factory cage covers, but I like your idea better. Tom in MN
Tom I should have said I was covering a column of gratings. In other words one set of holes wide on the right and two sets on the left. These are paralleling the concave adjustment arms. The left arm seems to have material coming at it at more of an angle which requires two or maybe three sets of holes to be covered. I just took some 3_16" flat iron, cut it to size and did alittle hammering to approximate the curve of the cage. Gamaman
Tom I hold the covers in with the same bolts used for a full size cage cover. On the right side my mini cover is 1 wide by 6 high and is held in place with a hole and a slot by the mid right and lower right bolts respectively. The left mini cover is 3 wide by 5 high and is held in place by the mid left and mid bottom bolts. This cover has a narrow (about 1" wide) extension that continues right about 2" to that mid bottom bolt. I'm brainstorming on some type of easy to remove pressure switch on the rear lower panel door that would alert me if residue buildup occurred. Hope this helps.
We have removed cage sweeps from basically all the machines around hear. We run quite a large varity of crops and have no problem. We remove 100% of anything to do with cage sweep. We remove the tin cover on the far left of cage and the two on the far right. We have the hard covers on both sides of left concave arm and the one next to right concave arm. We have a rare occasion of pluging starting over the left concave arm. We have installed a filler panel going straight up from left concave arm to prevent straw from starting to lay over that area of left concave arm. I think hard covers may be able to be left off if filler panel is made up and installed. If you look in old N6 parts book you will see deflectors that were hung over the rear concave securing bolts. Have never saw them deflectors so they must not of made it to the assembly line. If you have plugging starting at left rear where vertical panel meats slanted panel you could smooth out that area with some liquid steel or something.
