a Mother-In-law with a pipe wrench is easiest method..... I let mine run along beside the header... she got tired of riding in the little Radio Flyer pulled along behind.... Seriously, one could adapt a used unit off a R series if you have enough welding rods and creativity, attach to either thresher countershaft, or beater. Add another valve stack and rod or if late enuff a solinoid stack. Thought about it many times but never seen one...

I have heard of electric starters being used as reversers; never seen one in action,though.

They work but and it is a huge butthere is no convenient place to mount a flywheel on a Gleaner conventional. Tom in MN

On an MH the fly wheel can be mounted on the header drive pulley which is on a stub shaft on the left side of the header pivot. Center up the pulley in a lathe to get equal radius for four bolts and do the same with the fly wheel. We used Ford parts but I,m not sure that that is the best. 'pick your poison. We made the starter mount bracket out of large angle iron welded to the frame. 'had to add additional braces as the starter exerts enough force to bend things and force itself away from the fly wheel. It's not perfect but it saves some trips up and down the ladder. It can unscrew the slip clutch stub shafts on the threasher conveyor but some lock tight solves that. I think a delco remy starter with a enclosed plunger selonoid might be better at excluding dirt and dust. If all else fails there is always the head down, tail up five pronged wad exstractor. Every farmer should have rocks and wads. It keeps one from getting to cocky.
