Combines Can t stop barley loss

"separator concave cover" - as in the floor of the separator grate or as in concave filler stipsIJ We had a little experience with Barley and found it harder to stop loss than wheat. We ran 3-5 concave filler strips, threshing grate moved 2 marks up toward min, concave on 1 . Speed usually does the seed damage - the only adverse effect on slower cyl speed is capacity. WE found most of our loss was coming because the barley was so hard to shell - thus shelling was still occuring in the separator - and discharge side.

We had as many as eight reverse bars installed for barley loss in mid '90s. Reverse bars didn't help but started taking a bunch of power. He then installed covers on grate and took reverse bars off. Things went well after that. I hate to send you on wild goose chase for your condition but I think I would replace pegs with forward bars (I don't like pegs or knifes on rotor for it seems the better condition you keep the straw the better the seperation). I wish you had some sweeps to give a try at the 500RPM rotor speed. That and maybe converting removable cage door to what I call corn door may be just the ticket for that malting barley. Dan: I really think your 'corn door' might work in all crops. I think we have seen as much as 50% less loss just by your modification.

The concave cover or screen as Agco calls it is the Agco part not filler strips. I have used this in bluegrass to reduce the chopping of bluegrass straw with some positive results and then went right into wheat with not much additional rotor loss. However, in both cases the rotor speed is up in the 850-950 range.

Basically it is the removeable seperator cage door that I have cut out cage segments to make 1"X 2 3_4" vertically. No problem adding to shoe load in corn with Bison or Gleaner eight bar with sweeps. I believe tbran made one up for use with CDF and maybe another version of hyped up Gleaner eight bar. This isn't fully tested in all crops but I believe it might be a good option in some crops and conditions to maintain extremely low losses while maintaining excellant capacity and quality of crop. G'Day Guys been away from this site for awhile! For a quick temp "maybe" fix on your Barley! try taking the helicals off the removable cage section at the back of the processor! same bit that Dan does his "corn door Mod" We did do this with a Bison and it made a significantly difference to rotor loss! I'm with Dan, in keeping the straw intact as best we can and just knock out the grain! Barleys a bugger over here as well for keeping it in the machine! guys last year were stalling the machines when they got started in the Barley! one guy spent 4 hours unjamming his JD!!!! did the same next day and spent about two hours unjamming it! straw was green as a leak! but grain was dry!!! Another option is to open concave a bit and use filler bars to help hold a bit more grain in to thrash grain on grain, and rev it up a tad to wind it thought machine! open concave a bit for a run up paddock, and just see how many revs you can do before you do skin the barley!
