I have run a 2388 with a bigtop and had no trouble in 1000 hours. But before I put the bigtop on we did weld up the rims and the back chassis. I have also seen a bigtop on a 2188 with 1250 hours on the clock and had no trouble. Since the chassis cracked out before I put a bigtop on, I believe it was due to turning around too fast and the cracked rims were due to the extra weight of the 36ft front. The bigtop lets the header carry about 1.5 tonnes extra. The bigtop the will let you harvest the same amount as a 30ft front without a bigtop. The point is that if things (ie. chasis and rims) are cracking, you need to slow down and stop turning around so fast (to prevent the back wheels from sliding) as the cracking can happen even without carrying extra weight. I haven't had any problems with the extra weight and still run with a 36ft front and a bigtop.
