Hmmh ...., hard to tell. Here is our little slip clutch story: We ran two eight row heads and two twelve row heads, all new, last year. Right the first day, I broke a set of slip clutch bolts. Through that, I found out that the two twelve row heads had different slip clutches. One of them, which I will call the "old style", had the beefy 16mm bolts in and was built stronger. Its serial number tag also said "Made in Italy". The other twelve row and both eight row heads had the smaller 14mm bolts and a weaker design slip clutch in. Their serial number tag said "Assembled in America" on. That lead to the conclusion, that the later model corn heads had a weaker slip clutch. We went through lots of bolts, but never broke the clutch itself.

The corn heads come new with 8.8 hardness bolts and they will break often, i have had a lot of luck replacing the 8.8 hardness bolts with 10.9 hardness bolts

We have also replaced the 8.8 bolts with the 10.9 bolts. I just wonder if that is the right thing to doIJ We have not seen any slip-clutches broken on newer heads, even when replaced with 10.9 bolts, the slip-clutches seem to "hold-up". Has anyone seen anything differentIJ Just afraid that the heavy bolts will allow the clutch to grind too much! Has anyone broke a 10.9 bolt(a cat bolt) without trashing the clutchIJ

my question is have you broken several sets of bolts on the same rowIJ if you have it is not the slip causing the problem it is the bolts. after you slip the clutch several times by breaking the bolts it wears it down that is the only thing that i have personally seen happen. is that what is happeningIJ

You are obviously experiencing an extremely rare and isolated problem. Breaking the row-unit slip clutches without breaking the bolts leaves alot of question in my mind.
