Combines CDC engines in 1680s

The original piston design did not have a nickel-insert around the n2 piston ring, causing the ring land area to break, causing major engine damage. CaseIH instituted a upgrade program to replace all the sleeves and pistons on affected units, replacing the pistons with a new, improved design that had a nickel-insert around the ring land area. CDC_Cummins also came out with various engine changes that allowed better oil temperature regulation and better filtration, which resulted in a new-design engine oil filter which bypassed a portion of the oil through a "super fine" portion of the oil filter. In regards to the 5.9 Cummins over the Navistar DT-466 I wouldn't concider the cummins to be "superior" the navistar always seemed to have more snort and held together better, Just my opinion.

the 89 combines that had the cdc engine did not like the high rpm they had to turn. they would carbon up on top of piston and scratch liner. the ones we rebuilt. we probably done about 15. All in a sn range had to be completely overhauled. not as fail. they put a reverse twist in second ring to help control oil as iwas told. you should not have that problem with it. cdc engines kick a lot horses but have more trouble doing it than old IH engines.

1680 has an 8.3 liter CDC. I also do not consider it to be superior to the IH engine. It certainly is not anywhere near as fuel efficient.
