No -- at least I don't recall ever installing paddles or having an operator install any. Before about '02 we installed paddles on enclosed rotors, but these all had 8 rows of bars -- part of the evolution of learning, I guess. Shimming -- see a couple of posts down. I think that if the rotor is full diameter, wheat shouldn't really be a problem but with the forward tip narrow spaced bars may work a little better. FYI, we've been installing a few rotors in standard P1 machines in the northern tier of states and they appear to be doing very well. On these rotors we've been using 2 sets of P1 thresher bars.
