Combines Changing spirals on da huhhger

I just changed mine a few days ago. Not a bad job at all. My stripper plates needed new rods so I took all chains and guides off along with the plates. The spirals are held on with two pins. The pins need to be pounded back out the way they went in. Took some pounding but they came out easier then I thought. Once the pins are out pound the spirals off the shaft. It took some force to get them started, but once they started to move they came off pretty easy. After the spirals are off clean up the shafts with emery cloth. The new spirals will have paint inside the holes. Scrape and emery out paint and they will go on pretty easy with a few taps with a hammer. Put in new pins and the job is done knuckles in tact. Hope this helps

Nick, We use an air hammer with a tapered punch to get groove pins in spirals to move.Once they move the distance of the tapered punch, then we switch to a 5_16" roll pin punch made for an air hammer(Grind the little tit off the end so it is flat.)and the pin comes out with ease. When reinstalling use the air hammer with a blunt punch. This hasn't failed yet and the air hammer can also be used to remove the spiral from the shaft. Good luck, Hyper Harvest II

Thanks Hyper II, that's a great idea using air hammer. I'm from S. Iowa and tend to think of doing these remodel jobs with a 2 lb. hammer and a flameing wrench. Which is still probably what I'll use because I only have a whimmpy 3.5 hp Craftsman air compressor. I have been looking for some heavy pin punches but can't seem to find any designed for the 2 lb. hammer. Any suggestionsIJ arrgh

arrgh, You need to find a punch holder first then, get yourself some tapered punches to get pin started, then finish the job with a staight punch.Had to learn the hard way on this one as I still have a piece of punch about the size of a .22 in my left bicep. Be Careful, Hyper Harvest II
