Combines Cheat Herbicides

I used Olympus on about 60 acres this year and was disappointed with it on the downy brome. It was applied in Feb. which may be part of the problem. The grass is stunted, only 3 or 4 in tall, but it is still there. This is north central Okla. We were really wet until the end of Feb. and now are really dry, the wheat is all headed out and really needs a drink. John

I've used Maverick a couple of times. The smaller the cheat is, the better. Both times it was applied in the fall within 30 days after drilling the wheat. I would say it gave me about 80% control. If you have quite a bit come up in the wheat it's about all you can do. I wouldn't use Maverick as a planned application to control cheat. It's more of a rescue. If you know you may have a problem with cheat or other weeds in the wheat, planting Clearfield wheat and using Beyond herbicide may be a better option. I haven't tried it myself but have heard good things about that program.

Hey John, Where are you in N CentralIJ I am in northwest. As to the cheat: we have done maverick and clearfield(clearfield being more for rye). Clearfield is very expensive factoring cost of seed and chemical+application. My $0.02, OKFarmer

OKfarmer, I'm north of Enid about 15 mi. We also have a lot of rye this year as I think the wet fall brought everything up. Probably will graze some out next year as I don't need that much hay. John

Olympus did a good job of cheat killing, both fall and spring applications. Fall was about 3 leaf wheat and cheat growing well, spring was in mid March and killed cheat out. I did see stunting of the wheat plant and reduced stem length and reduced head size for both applications. A neighbor used Maverick last year and had major stunting and thinning, you could see a rabbit running in the field it was hurt that bad. Both herbicides look like they will reduce yields from stunting, but increase yields by reducing competition. I live in N-Central Ok.
