Combines Chopper for l3IJ

Marshall, I would look in the salvage yards for a chopper. I would think that the choppers for an 'l' or an 'l2' would be very similar, although I know that the 'l2' could be had with a two-speed chopper, so the drives may be a little different. I think the difference was on the drive pulley(s) on the machine rather than the driven pulley on the chopper, but you may have to watch that. If you find one, make sure that it is balanced. A chopper that is out of balance can sure wreck the back end of the combine in a hurry. Also, check that the hammers have a square edge on them. Rounded edges will not pull the straw through well, especially if tough. They can be turned, if only rounded on one side, but use new bolts and locking nuts. If you need to put a new set of hammers on, adjust the price accordingly. I just discovered that the chopper floor plate from a Massey 750 or 760 can be used to replace the worn-out floor in my 'l' chopper. The knife spacing and length dimensions are all the same, but the Massey is wider. We're just going to cut out a piece of the floor the width we need, and weld it in place of the original. In fact, it looks like even the hammers are the same. Anyone know if that is trueIJ Gleanerpilot

These choppers were all built by Hesston. That was a long time ago but if my memory hasnt gone along with every thing else Hesston built choppers for others as well. A good place to check in Aberdeen SD. Meyers Tractor Salvage. Good luck...
