I always fully lower the pan in corn and remove the knives. Have had no problems.

You will have to remove the entire hinge in order to replace the pan. There are 10 bolts that the round heads are only accessible from the rotor area, meaning you either need to be real small to crawl in over the auger bed to get to the right side or you can remove the sieves and the shaker rails which will open up an area behind the auger bed to get to them from the back which is what we ended up doing on the machine we just removed the chopper pan on. We needed to replace the bushings on the shaker arms anyways so it made sense to take the back end apart. Good luck JFarms
