Combines Combine hydraulic oil upgrade IJ IJ

I agree Dexron is a pain because all we can usually buy is quart bottles. Putting 8 gallons into a hydraulic system 1 quart at a time year after year is enough to try a mans patience. About 20 years ago I decided that hydraulic oil should be good enough in the combine because combine hydraulics are the same as hydraulic equipment on other pieces of machinery that use hydraulic fluid. Half way through the season the pump shaft broke so I switched back to Dexron. Nobody will ever know if the shaft broke because of oil type or if the shaft would have broken anyway. lets hope someone who knows the answer will reply. Tom in MN

The older D17's used dextron. I think they started using hydraulic fluid in the newer ones. I know that my old 175 uses 821. They must be very similiar. BTW, I usually buy dextron in 5-gal. buckets from the auto parts stores. They can order it. I have also bought it in gal. jugs.
