I can't believe you can afford a 97 9600 by farming 600 acres. A farm around here has 26 full circles of corn, they use 1 9750 combine now that's getting your money's worth. I combine 600 acres too but I use a 76 MF 760, it's not fancy but I am a senior in high school and I bought it combined my wheat and took on 3 more jobs I payed for it in one year. I think in the earlier posts when the guy talked about farmers making poor business decesions it's reflected in the fact that someone would actually spend that much money on a piece of equipment they'll use 1 week of the year on 600 acres. The numbers do not add up. I'm not trying to be critical here but when you are saying you can't afford to rent land I laugh. With that big green investment sitting on your hands I don't see how you can afford not to rent landIJ

Yeah, but you don't know how much he paid for that 9600, The prices of used combines have fallen out of bed recently. (Just not in my part of the country) I would think a 9600 is a lot of machine for 600 acres, but hey if he got a deal on it, he will just finish up harvesting his 600 acres faster. They are not building any small combines like 4420s and 6620s anymore, so eventually all the smaller part time producers who own combines are going to be buying all of these great big combines that large farms are trading every couple of years. When I built my new equipment shed, I spent a little more money to make it tall enough for a 9510 with 38" tires. It probably was wishful thinking, but it would really be a pain in the a** if I ever got one of the big things and it, would not fit in my shed.

I guess the farmers who get the most return on their investments are the ones doing well. It's not hard to figure out. Farming's a tradeoff, in every facet. Do you lease new every year or so, or buy a tractor and wear the wheels off itIJ It depends on the situation. I know a man who farms 96 acres of sod and has a greenhouse business and he lives VERY well, takes fine vacations, and just built a new home. On the other spectrum, I know a man who farms around 1500 acres and struggles. It's all in the crops and management.

Hey we got onr hell of a deal on it ! and we don't just get too go to school and farm we all have jobs off of the farm plus we all have families now ! but i see what you are saying ! but around here it is cheaper to buy a 9600 then a 9500or9400 ! and even the bigger heads are cheapera 30' head is alot cheaper then a 20' head we also have one of them and are looking too buy a semi so we can haul away from it ! we have had our share of the old stuff and still have it but are tried of the old combines ! we have a 65 4020 a 77 4430 and 1958 international grain truck ! i think we owe ourselves a better machine.. plus it will last us longer then most because it will be treated like a baby .. haven't even used it and already waxed it! lol i hope you understand where i'm coming from IJ and i hope you do much better on your farming in the future ! beacuse we all know where that us young ones are the future of farming !!!!!!!!!! will have some pics of wheat harvest this year !

Sorry if I came off pis*ed. I guess they have been going pretty reasonable and maybe I was a little jealous!(as i am swallowing my pride). You will be better off in the following years as I will still be limping my 760 along. Remember we are all in the same boat(except for wealthy Nebraskafarmer) who critizes us barely getting along. Happy farming to all and it will get better or we will all be working for Ted Turner.

hey you just say what you feel an d thats allright nothing wrong with that ! My dad has had two other jobs beside the farm for over 35 years and thats why i say we owe ourselves the newer combine ! plus taxes have been eating him alive for the past few years ! as long as you takecare of the old girl she'll keep doing you a fine job ! hope you do well this year and in the future !
