The 1982 Series 3 N5 should be fairly trouble free. The N6 prior to the 82 Series 3 was the motor prone machine. The Series 3 in 82 changed to the American Bosch fuel system and slowed the engines down to where that weren't blowing apart anymore. Getting as close to 3000 hours as you are I would suggest to have the UNDERHAUl done(Rod bolts and Bearings). I had my 82 N6 S3 done a year ago and it was less than $1500 to do(cheap insurance for a 3200 hr engine). Check the rest of the wear areas, but if the machine has been well cared for then there shouldn't be a problem. The Early N5's were rarely a problem , the early N6 had many problems and updates as did the early N7. But all the problems were pretty much taken care of by the Series 3(82) and the R5 is basically identical to your N5 as is the R6 to the later N6. Also you might want to think about Hyperizing the machine and giving it even more capacity with less load on the engine, you will have the P1 processor.
